Leadership Through Questions

E-mail Print PDF

I heard a great statement yesterday at one of the ABHE workshops by Roy King. He said, "Good leadership has more to do with asking the right questions than it does with finding the right answers." I agree because leadership, particularly transformational leadership has to do with becoming a catalyst for the growth and development of others. Leaders who constantly provide the answer are, in effect, stunting the growth of their followers. I have always been fascinated by the way Jesus used questions as he sought to help his disciples grow, questions like:

"What will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life?" (Matthew 16:26)

"When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth"? (Luk 18:8)

One of my favorites comes from Jesus' interaction with the rich young ruler: "Why do you call me good?" (Mark 10:18)

Here are some questions to ponder about your leadership style:
  • Are you a good leader?
  • Do you immediately give the answer when you know it?
  • Do you wait and watch as your followers struggle with resolving the problem for themselves?
  • Do you feel threatened as a leader when your followers come up with the answer?
  • If you do, what does that say about your emotional intelligence?
  • What are some questions that God, the supreme leader, is asking you today?
